MURALS
Mary Vaughan takes her knowledge of art and innovative teaching style into schools by engaging children/teens with mural making. Bringing awareness for the earth and the natural world into focus, Mary’s work is timely. But what this artist does beyond a well-executed art lesson is priceless. These collaborative works of art build community; enliven an environment and boost creative confidence of all ages. When she comes into a school, students, teachers, maintenance, administrators and parents are all invited to help create a unique piece of permanent art, together. The “unveiling” is anticipated by all. It often encompasses brass instruments being played by kids when the curtain falls or other departments taking part in inventive, unexpected ways. These remarkable section-by-section murals mark a place in time and reveal rewarding moments. For a good look at enthusiasm, which impels to learning, see the gallery section for images of these murals in action.
Such work is needed in the curriculum, where the arts help to develop the whole individual. Unfortunately, this is also where budget cuts are made. This is one reason Mary does this work. With strong educational background and artist experience, she believes art weaves itself into every other subject in unprecedented ways. Without it, something as vital as a civilized mind, not just a smart one, is at risk.
