Bringing the physicality of the outdoors into the studio, Vaughan emerges as an artist with a passion for abstraction and all things sensual. Her work is a painterly process through metaphor, using organic objects, earth forms or small living entities to suggest a connection to human emotion. While some images are playful, others exude nostalgia, depth and intuitive meaning. She is vastly interested in the edible and nature as it relates to our own bodies and experience.
Vaughan earned an MFA from the Maine College of Art in Portland in 2000, and an MA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence in 1995. She taught in Princeton, NJ for 13 years before moving to Sonoma County. Her work can be seen in Plaza Arts Gallery in Healdsburg, her South A Street studio in Santa Rosa, or through a number of juried exhibitions each year.
A Side Blurb
Mary became lead artist & summer coordinator for Artstart in 2002. This highly successful “art as a job” program selects 35 apprentices (aged 15 to 21) based on portfolio reviews to produce public art with professional artists within Sonoma County. Having taught art in Princeton, NJ, 13 years, she became the perfect mentor for young artists interested in art as a career. She will help launch the Artstart Art House and Workspace Gallery on Bennett Valley Road with the 2007 summer program.
